Special Programs

ANHC has a number of special programs designed to address the unique needs of the populations who present at the Center for care.

Women's Health Improvement Program

The Center's Breast and Cervical Cancer Program is designed to eliminate barriers to cancer screening for low income women. Services provided at minimal or no cost include Annual Gynecological exams with Pap Smears and Breast exams, Colposcopy, screening and diagnostic Mammograms, Breast fine needle aspiration, Breast ultrasounds, Stereotactic biopsies and Breast surgeon consults.

Diabetes Control Program

The Center provides comprehensive case managed health care for persons with diabetes. A certified diabetes educator (and RN) is available to meet with patients individually to help them manage their diabetes. There are also ongoing diabetes group classes offered free of charge and open to the community. Consultation for specialized services is facilitated by clinicians as needed.

Health Care for the Homeless

The Center's "Homeless Team" consists of two certified physician assistants (PA's), one R.N. case managers, 2 social workers, and two assistants. In addition to providing services at both Center sites, the team PA's, RN and assistant travel to several local shelters to provide care with dignity and privacy to on of the city's most vulnerable populations. The team case managers do health education, outreach and work one-on-one with homeless patients to connect them with a multitude of support services.

HIV/AIDS Program

ANHC is the largest provider of comprehensive case managed health care for persons with HIV disease and AIDS. The programs case managers provide a litany of services for HIV/AIDS Center patients and continually emphasizes "wellness" education that is focused on the need for them to get and stay healthy.

Perinatal Program

The Perinatal Program provides a combination of quality medical care to all pregnant Center patients. Social and medical intakes are conducted at the beginning of a woman's pregnancy and supportive case management services are available for the duration of pregnancy and up to one year post-partum.

Tuberculosis Control

ANHC has always seen patients with Tuberculosis (TB), as it is a disease of the underserved. The Center has a Clinical Consultant to the State of Alaska Section of Epidemiology on Tuberculosis. The physician also provides consultation and education on TB issues to both Center and non-Center health care providers and treats many TB patients.

Women, Infants, Children (WIC)

The WIC program serves pregnant, breastfeeding and postpartum women, infants and children up to the age of 5. WIC can help provide basic foods like, milk, cheese, eggs, cereal, juice, peanut butter, beans and infant formula to parents with moderate income. Registered Dietitians see clients at the Anchorage Neighborhood Health Center and Providence Family Practice Center.
