Growing To Meet The Need: Building A New Health Center (updated June 4th, 2010)
Access to primary care is one of the most critical needs among the medically underserved and uninsured in Anchorage. As the number of uninsured Alaskans continues to grow, the Health Center's services are increasingly in demand. And as our elderly Medicare recipients struggle to find primary care providers, we are their safety net, and sometimes their only choice. Too many Alaskans lack a “medical home” and for increasing numbers of our residents, we are that medical home.
The new Anchorage Neighborhood Health Center will be located on C Street, near the intersection with International Airport Road, centrally located to provide easy access for patients from throughout the Anchorage area. The new facility will enable ANHC to increase its capacity to serve the community in a modern comfortable environment. The Health Center will be able to consolidate all of its services and administrative offices at the one location.
We have developed partnerships with local, state and federal agencies, and local health providers. This broad base of support will enable us to achieve our funding goals. We have raised $19 million toward our goal, incoluding a $6 in the 2011 State of Alaska capital budget. In late 2010 and 2011, we will conduct a capital campaign to raise private funds in our community. Site work has begun and we hope to break ground in fall, 2011, and open during the winter of 2012.
The total need for the new clinic and supporting equipment is $26.9 million. Our capital campaign will include state and federal requests, foundation grant requests and community support from corporations, individual donors, staff and patients. The need is great, but so is the opportunity to create a better health system for Alaskans.
